Dujiangyan Water-Discharging Festival

 The annual Dujiangyan Water-Discharging Festival expressed Sichuan people s worship of water and their respect to Li Bing and his son. Since the birth of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a miracle in Water conservancy history of the world, the Chengdu Plain has turned into a stretch of fertile soil.
    The initial water-discharging festival was only a ceremonious water-sacrificing ceremony.When it came to the Qing Dynasty, besides inheriting the old water-sacrificing ceremony, such activities as chopping crossbeam to release water with bigger appreciation were increased. Whenchoppers in ancient uniform jump onto the crossbeam to chop the cable, a row of firm crossbeams will collapse, giving out great breakage. The stored water will then break through the restriction of crossbeam and rush towards the distance and fertile land on the Chengdu Plain. The people use the festival with minority customs and oriental color to commemorate the achievements of the ancestors and express their yearning of a good life.
