Shu Embroidery from Sichuan Province,a brilliant Pearl in China’s industrial arts treasury,is among the most famous Chinese embroideries together with Su Embroidery from Suzhou,Xiang Embroidery from Hunan and Yue Embroidery from Guangdong. Shu Embroidery,boasting a long history and unique and superb embroidering technique,was originally a kind of folk crafts and with the advancement of the times,this handicraft popular among the people has gradually developed into an industry of scale.
Shu Embroidery possesses more than one hundred embroidering patterns including multicolored brocade full-embroidery,line embroidery combining painting and needlework,double-faced embroidery,as well as dizzy stitch,gauze stitch,dot stitch overlay stitch and so on,which are all inimitable and exquisite techniques.
At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,Shu Embroidery enjoyed a high reputation in the world.In the 1915 Panama World Expo,Shu Embroidery won the gold prize.
Since the Republic of China period,though the uniforms for officials and royal tributes were no longer included in the products of Shu Embroidery as in the Qing Dynasty,more and more daily necessities covering almost every aspect of daily life have become the main products of Shu Embroidery.Along with the expansion of the products,more decorative patterns were Introduced in Shu Embroidery and a large number of embroi-deries patterned with famous paintings created in the past dynasties avalanched.In 1971,the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory resumed production and its products are mainly daily necessities and decorations.The former includes manteaus,skins,pillowslips,quilt covers,bed sheets,curtains and color canopies,etc.The embroidered decorations include central scrolls,embroidered screens and so on.In the public appraisal of the Second China’s lndustrial Arts Full Blossom Awards in 1982 and the Paris World Expo in 1985,Shu Embroidery was highly valued and well received by the participants.
